Fly ash particles have high hardness and fast flow rate, and ordinary carbon steel pipes (such as 20 # steel) may be worn through within weeks or months. Therefore, the key to the design of elbows and Y-shaped pipes lies in their wear-resistant layer. At present, the mainstream solution in the industry is to use ceramic lined composite steel pipes

Base material: The outer steel pipe is usually made of 20 # steel, Q235B or Q345B, providing structural strength and ensuring weldability.
Wear resistant layer: The key component is the inner ceramic lining. The most commonly used is corundum ceramic (Al ₂ O ∝, with alumina content ≥ 95%), with a hardness of HRA 85 or higher and wear resistance more than 10 times that of ordinary steel pipes.
Other high-performance materials: For extreme working conditions, zirconia (ZrO ₂, higher toughness) or silicon carbide (SiC, higher hardness and temperature resistance) ceramics can be selected.
Transition layer: There is a transition layer between the ceramic layer and the steel pipe to ensure bonding strength and prevent the ceramic from falling off under thermal shock.

Curvature Radius (R/D ratio)

Standard pneumatic: R=1.5D (cost-effective, low pressure loss)

High-velocity (≥25 m/s): R=3D~10D to reduce outer-arc impact erosion

Avoid sharp 90° short-radius elbows (wear life drops 50%+).

Angle & Structure

Common angles: 45°, 90°; 30° for gradual direction changes

Backpack-type reinforcement on outer arc (for ceramic/bimetallic elbows)

Smooth inner surface (Ra ≤ 0.8 μm) to prevent ash buildup

Connection Methods: Welding preferred; flange for easy replacement in high-wear zones

Flow Split/Combine Issues: Erosion at branch junctions is extremely severe; use streamlined internal deflectors or spherical Y-tees to guide flow

Material: Same as elbows (ceramic/bimetallic for main lines; high-chrome iron for slurry)

Branch Angle: 30°~45°; avoid 90° direct branches to reduce turbulence

Wall Thickness: Local thickening at the junction and branch inlets

Handling: Never strike ceramic-lined fittings; prevent cracking at the ceramic-steel interface

Alignment: Ensure no internal steps at joints (ash particles get stuck and accelerate wear)

Velocity Control: Keep pneumatic fly ash speed at 18–22 m/s (too slow causes sedimentation; too fast leads to catastrophic erosion)

Regular Inspection: Use ultrasonic thickness measurement for elbows/Y-tees every 3 months; replace if wall thickness decreases by 40%
