Wear and Temperature Resistant Cyclone Spigot Liner Krebs
This is the critical wear-resistant component at the bottom of the cyclone separator for discharging coarse particles (underflow), and it is also one of the most rapidly worn-out and frequently replaced consumable parts in the entire system.
Material: Silicon carbide (SiC), a ceramic with very high hardness (Mohs ~9–9.5).
Manufacturing: Sintering process fuses SiC powder at high temperature (2000–2200°C) under pressure to form a dense, solid, wear-resistant block.
Properties:
Extreme abrasion resistance
High compressive strength (~3500 MPa)
Corrosion resistance (acids, alkalis, and molten salts)
High thermal conductivity and heat resistance
Electrical conductivity varies (depending on formulation)

The critical role in the Krebs cyclone
In the Krebs hydrocyclone, the inner lining of the sand discharge nozzle is the most severely worn component. This occurs because, within the high-speed rotating slurry, coarse particles are thrown against the wall by centrifugal force and ultimately discharged at high velocity from the nozzle, resulting in intense erosive wear on this area.
Actual case data (Fosterville Gold Mine):
After approximately 672 hours (4 weeks) of operation, the inner lining of a standard rubber sand-sinking nozzle expanded its inner diameter from 82 mm to 105 mm.
After upgrading to a ceramic lining, the wear rate is reduced by approximately 20-fold, and the service life is extended to 8,760 hours (1 year).
The cost for reconstructing a single cyclone (including lining replacement) is approximately: 8,000 yuan for material costs + 8,000 yuan for material costs + 1,000 yuan for labor costs.
Comparison of Common Materials
|
Material quality |
Characteristic |
Applicable scene |
|
abrasive rubber |
Low cost, high toughness, but rapid wear |
Under normal operating conditions, frequent replacement is required (approximately every 1–2 months). |
|
Ceramics/Silicon Carbide |
Excellently wear-resistant (with a service life 20 times that of rubber), but at a higher cost. |
High wear and high corrosion in harsh environments, reducing downtime for maintenance |
|
Alumina ceramic |
The wear resistance is 4 to 6 times that of polyurethane. |
Applicable to grinding and grading operations for metallic and non-metallic ores |
Purchase and Maintenance Recommendations
Maintenance frequency is desired, a silicon carbide (SiC/SSiC) ceramic lining is the preferred choice, offering cost-effectiveness through extended service life and reduced downtime.
Cycle replacement monitoring: Wear of the sand outlet liner may lead to:
The efficiency of the classification process decreases (due to the inclusion of coarse particles in the overflow, known as "coarse particle discharge").
The flow state of the slurry deteriorates, affecting subsequent processes.
Under normal operating conditions, the sand discharge port should exhibit an umbrella-shaped discharge pattern. If it displays a cord-like or bead-like discharge ("dry pull"), or exhibits excessive angle without pressure ("loose pull"), this indicates abnormal operating conditions requiring inspection and adjustment.
Types of Installation
Tile lining – Sintered SiC tiles mounted onto steel plates with epoxy or mechanical fixing.
Pipe/Elbow lining – Cylindrical or conical inserts for pipelines.
Modular block lining – For chutes, hoppers, and high-wear zones; blocks interlock for strength.
Tip: Due to its brittleness, impact zones are often lined with ceramic-rubber composites or backed with steel.
