The core application scenario for selecting silicon carbide linings in ball mills is when extremely high wear resistance, strong acid and alkali corrosion environments, strict prevention of iron contamination, and high thermal load conditions must all be met simultaneously, while also being sensitive to overall operating costs (not just initial capital cost).
Key Selection Criteria

Extreme Abrasive Conditions: Handling hard materials with Mohs hardness greater than 8 (such as silicon carbide, zirconia, alumina, quartz sand, etc.), where conventional high-alumina ceramics or metal liners wear out too quickly. Silicon carbide, with a Mohs hardness of 9.3–9.5, significantly extends service life.

Highly Corrosive Media Environment: Grinding media include strong acids, strong alkalis, or highly saline solutions, requiring liners with excellent chemical stability to prevent leaching of metal ions or material dissolution.

High Purity / Zero Iron Contamination Requirement: Used in the production of electronic-grade ceramic powders, semiconductor materials, and high-end pigments, where contamination by iron, manganese, or other metallic impurities is strictly prohibited. Silicon carbide achieves purity above 99% and does not release impurities itself.

High-Speed / High Thermal Load Operation: High equipment rotational speeds generate significant frictional heat; thus, silicon carbide's superior thermal conductivity-far exceeding that of alumina-enables rapid heat dissipation, preventing material degradation due to heat accumulation or liner cracking from thermal shock.

Lifecycle Cost Optimization: Although initial procurement costs are higher than those of high-alumina ceramics and polyurethane, under these demanding conditions, silicon carbide liners offer service lives 6–7 times longer than polyurethane and over 5 times longer than high-alumina ceramics, significantly reducing downtime, replacement frequency, and overall maintenance costs.
