ZTA (zirconia-toughened alumina) wear-resistant ceramics are primarily used in applications requiring both high hardness and impact resistance-pure alumina is hard but brittle, while pure zirconia is tough but expensive; ZTA strikes the ideal balance between the two.
Specifically, the following types of applications will be prioritized for its use:
High-impact, high-drop conditions: where material particle size is large, drop height is significant, and impact force is strong-such as in chutes, hoppers, feed cones, and crusher liners. Ordinary alumina ceramics are prone to cracking under such impacts, whereas ZTA utilizes the toughening effect of zirconia phase transformation to absorb impact energy, resulting in a service life several times longer than that of high-chrome cast iron.
Dual requirements of high wear resistance and high toughness: Components such as classification wheels in high-speed jet mills, flow parts in large pumps and valves, and powder conveying pipelines under high impact must resist abrasive cutting from hard materials while maintaining sufficient bending strength. ZTA achieves a bending strength of 600–1200 MPa and has fracture toughness approximately twice that of pure alumina.
Scenarios with frequent equipment shutdowns and high replacement costs: In material conveying and pulverizing systems of industries such as thermal power, steel, mining, and cement, traditional metal components wear out quickly and require frequent replacement. ZTA liners offer longer service life than conventional alumina ceramics, resulting in lower overall costs including downtime losses and replacement expenses.
Areas with significant temperature fluctuations: ZTA has better thermal shock resistance than pure alumina, enabling it to withstand rapid temperature changes without cracking, making it suitable for equipment subjected to fluctuating operating temperatures.
For cost-effective selection: If the operating conditions involve severe wear but budget is limited, ZTA offers a balanced solution-its performance is close to that of zirconia ceramic, yet the cost is significantly lower than pure zirconia. This is why many mining companies in Europe and America use it.
Note: Although ZTA is tough, its hardness is slightly lower than that of pure alumina (approximately HRA 88–90). If the operating conditions involve purely low-impact, high-abrasive wear, pure alumina liners may be more cost-effective. ZTA is better suited for applications involving both abrasion and impact.
